Birthday

The day after the eclipse was my birthday. It was also the last evening on board, so the restaurant staff was going all out to make sure we had a memorable and tip-worthy time. We got baked alaska for dessert

followed by a birthday cake brought over by the head-waiter, which I shared with my table mates (John and Mary, both QuarkXPress users) and Rosemarie, Ellen, Anne, Ken, Esther and Rico at the next table over.

As you can see, all the tables had balloons that evening, weighted down with cute little balloon weights. Naturally, a boatload of nerds will take this opportunity to determine just how many balloons it takes to achieve neutral boyancy. As you can see in the second image, the answer is nine. Along with several other diners, we then released our balloon cluster to float randomly about the atrium in the center of the ship. I expect the maintenence crew hates having to clean balloon fragments out of the elevator machinery.

It was rather short notice, but Rosemarie and her friends managed to find me a small island-girl business-card holder for a birthday present, nicely wrapped in newspaper with a little rubber-band and toilet-paper flower for decoration. The flower hangs on my cubicle wall now.
