Since
1995, DISHA is working on Environment, Social Health, Human
Rights and related issues. A team of health professionals, environmental
professionals and human rights and social activists constituted
the organisation with the commitment to develop awareness among
the toiling people, to locate their environmental risks, occupational
hazards, health problems and related social constraints and
to find their remedies.
During
1995-1997 DISHA conducted two health clinics at dump sites in
Eastern Calcutta for the waste pickers working in that area
and conducted studies on their health and socio-economic status
together with the environmental problems at the dump site. DISHA
conducted studies on Diagnostic Criteria of the Occupational
Diseases and workshops in collaboration with the Employees’
State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) and National Institute for
Occupational Health (NIOH).
DISHA
is engaged towards evolving a safe policy for disposal of municipal
waste and especially clinical waste. It launched vehement opposition
against the move of the WB State Government to indiscriminately
install incinerators at hospitals threatening our environment
with severe pollution and diseases.
