Michael,

This is a response, not a crossfire.

When I write a response as I did, I do not intend for it to be snippy as
there is no reason to be so on this list-serve. Everyone has a right to
voice their opinions, suggestions and questions. I was trying to get
more out of your problem than simply trying to determine whether a piece
of HTML was possible. Yes, people have responded to your question,
coming up with clever work-arounds which I agree are incredibly
educational and fun. Due to its nature, HTML requires that we, the
developers, utilize our creativity to overcome its limitations. Your
question did not provide us with a problem to solve, it simply asked
whether something was feasible. If you gave the list a little more to
chew on, the responses would be much more interesting and helpful. I
apologize if you think that I was being antagonistic but I would
appreciate that you consider your responses a little more.

TASHE,
The Assumed Snippy HTML Enforcer.

I'm surprised that no one yet has said anything about how useless almost
all of those image maps are; the first three of them could just be
replaced with HREF tags around the images. Granted this wouldn't confine
the active area to just the yellow buttons (it would include some of the
chrome area around them), but the images are cropped close enough that
that really shouldn't be an issue.

I would even consider dividing the buttons in the bottom corner into
separate images and linking them individually. Parenthetically, there are
some performance issues here; using a single image this size may load
faster than a bunch of requests for very small images. See this
c|net article for more information:
http://www.cnet.com/Content/Builder/Authoring/Speed/ss01k.html

Linking in the Marigo logo and confining the active area to its
non-rectangular shape is really the only thing on the page that I would
say warrants an image map.

Another thing, unless you have some sort of deal with Adobe, I would lose
the "Made with Page Mill" label, or at least make it much smaller.

Now that I've got that kvetching off my chest, the page is really very
nice looking. Very clean, effective design. I don't care what some
designers out there say -- three-dimensional buttons, including beveled,
VCR-looking buttons, are more intuitive from a user-interface point of
view. They just need to be handled gently and properly (the way Filippo
has done nicely) not thrown about recklessly, "Bevels and drop shadows all
'round!!" which has caused some people to say, "Thou shalt not."

Oops, sorry. I thought I was done kvetching...

Subject: new article - single pixel trick

We had a very animated round of talk awhile back about the in/famous
single pixel trick. There is now an interesting 'how-to' article on
WebReview, direct URL:

http://www.webreview.com/98/01/02/feature/index.html

And folks, this article does not deal with your father's single pixel
trick!

"Until David Siegel came along and championed the use of
single square pixel images, drawing lines on a Web page was
limited to using the <HR> tag. This week, Scott Hamlin takes
the single pixel image a step further and shows us how to
draw complex images, as well as horizontal and verticle rule
lines, using colored and animated single pixel images."

Subject: lost my JavaScript (boo hoo)

Some time ago, I found a neat little JavaScript that was basically an
HTML page that was an address book.

It had a white background and on it was a long list of names on it
(Asian students in some organization) and check boxes. The way it worked
was that you could check any or all of the names that you wanted to send
email to. At the bottom of the list, were some additional form buttons
that could either check or uncheck the entire list.

It was simple and handy and as you might imagine, it had a million
possible uses. Naturally, I have gone and misplaced this file. Does it
sound familiar to anyone? Anyone know where it might be found? Again?

Thanks.
