Paper draft
Like concept, this is another step usually not took in great consideration by people that first approach 3D graphics.
Although the use of a graphical modeler can reduce the need of paper draft, it will be even useful, if not indispensable when modeling a complex object, or an object that requires great precision or even a complex texture.
Usually a squared paper sheet and a pencil (and a rubber) are sufficient.
For some purpose you may need ruled sheets (inches or millimetres) for precision design and a compass to draw arcs and circles.
I use POV-Ray for modeling and rendering and, since I use it under MacOS I must use a text editor instead of a graphical modeler (because the only graphical modeler for the MacOS version of POV-Ray is Mondfarilo wich is far from completeness).
You can save a considerable amount of time drawing down a draft of your scene on paper before making it on you computer.
Even the creation of textures can be easier if you sketch some ideas on a paper before.
