Learning from books William Osler : A Life in Medicine I enjoyed reading this lovely book , written with great details and clarity, by a well known Canadian medical historian. Before writing Osler's biography, Michael Bliss have written many other books, including The Discovery of Insulin (1984), and Banting:A Biography(1992.) Osler(1849-1919), was a model physician who practiced clinical medicine and excelled in bed side diagnosis. He was devoted to teaching and medical writings. His achievements and warm personality had won him friends and admirers all over the world. This book gave me the inspiration of a great physician. I also got a good glimpse of the practice of medicine at the turn of the 20th century. Allow a couple of week-ends to digest this 600 page book. I particularly enjoyed the five chapters, covering the period when Osler was at McGill, in Philadelphia and at Johns Hopkins. After Johns Hopkins, Osler settled in Oxford, England. This biography of Doctor William Osler is a delightful book to read. It is an ideal gift for a physician or anyone interested in medicine. Slater, Robert: Saving Big Blue Slater, Robert: Saving Big Blue—Leadership lessons & turnaround tactics of IBM’s Lou Gerstner, McGraw-Hill, 1999 ISBN 0-07-134211-7 This is an interesting book about how IBM’s Gerstner stressed service, propelled IBM into the Internet resolution and rescued IBM from ruin. Quite different from 1993, today’s IBM is one of the most profitable & powerful companies. Ceruzzi, Paul E: A History of Modern Computing This is a nice book about electronic digital computer’s history since the 1940’s. Starting with ENIAC of 1945, the author covers several generations of digital computers. A paper back version is now available (ISBN 0-262-531690).
