Change of venue! They needed someone for a month at the CAOC (Combined Air Operations Center) in Vicenza, Italy.

After going out through Germany and to Vicenza, I got to stay at "the Nog". There were 8 rooms above a trattoria and two dinners a week were included free.
083psrc.jpg
No pictures of the base, but this is another of the Nog. It was August, so even traffic was light.
084psrc.jpg
August was the perfect month to be in Vicenza. Long, warm days, little traffic, everyone thinking vacation.
085psrc.jpg
The Nog was truly a wonderful place to stay and a great little haven from everything. Nice contrast to Tuzla.
086psrc.jpg
Paulo, the proprietor, was extremely generous and accomodating. When his staff took their vacation, he had us all up to his villa for dinner.
087psrc.jpg
The view outside the rooms.
088psrc.jpg
Vicenza was a beautiful old city. My work was usually done by early afternoon, so plenty of time to get around and see things.
089psrc.jpg
I rented a bicycle for the month.
090psrc.jpg
Vicenza is an old, walled city, but has grown beyond its old walls. It has a good mix of old and new.
091psrc.jpg
View into a courtyard.
092psrc.jpg
Nice downtown area.
093psrc.jpg
We had a US CAOC personnel dinner in this restaurant in the wall.
094psrc.jpg
Some more scenes of Vicenza.
095psrc.jpg
Vicenza is about an hours drive inland from Venice.
096psrc.jpg
The mix of medieval and modern is interesting.
097psrc.jpg
Another scene in Vicenza, up on the hill near the Nog.
098psrc.jpg
More Vicenza.
099psrc.jpg
View from a hill just out of town along the road past the Nog.
100psrc.jpg
The hills are covered with nice villas and vineyards.
101psrc.jpg
When weather in the Balkans would force an early cancellation of a mission, I would have enough time to explore northern Italy a little.
102psrc.jpg
Lake Garda was one of my favorite areas to visit.
103psrc.jpg
It was August and the beaches of Lake Garda were packed with vacationers.
104psrc.jpg
More Lake Garda, toward the northern end, I think.
105psrc.jpg 106psrc.jpg
Unfortunately, things were usually closed by the time I got there or closed for August. This is a castle/museum in Trent.
107psrc.jpg 108psrc.jpg
109psrc.jpg
This was the back entrance to the castle/walled city at Soave (I think)
110psrc.jpg
Soave.

Verona, Italy
114psrc.jpg 115psrc.jpg
The Arena di Verona, famous for large-scale outdoor stagings of grand opera.
116psrc.jpg
Props for Aida at the Arena di Verona.
117psrc.jpg
Another view of the Arena.
118psrc.jpg 119psrc.jpg 120psrc.jpg
Unfortunately, I did not get to attend any performances.
