Change
of venue! They needed someone for a month at the CAOC (Combined Air Operations
Center) in Vicenza, Italy. |
After
going out through Germany and to Vicenza, I got to stay at "the Nog". There were
8 rooms above a trattoria and two dinners a week were included free. |
No
pictures of the base, but this is another of the Nog. It was August, so even traffic
was light. | August
was the perfect month to be in Vicenza. Long, warm days, little traffic, everyone
thinking vacation. |
The
Nog was truly a wonderful place to stay and a great little haven from everything.
Nice contrast to Tuzla. |
Paulo,
the proprietor, was extremely generous and accomodating. When his staff took their
vacation, he had us all up to his villa for dinner. |
The
view outside the rooms. |
Vicenza
was a beautiful old city. My work was usually done by early afternoon, so plenty
of time to get around and see things. |
I
rented a bicycle for the month. |
Vicenza
is an old, walled city, but has grown beyond its old walls. It has a good mix
of old and new. | View
into a courtyard. | Nice
downtown area. |
We
had a US CAOC personnel dinner in this restaurant in the wall. |
Some
more scenes of Vicenza. |
Vicenza
is about an hours drive inland from Venice. |
The
mix of medieval and modern is interesting. |
Another
scene in Vicenza, up on the hill near the Nog. |
More
Vicenza. | View
from a hill just out of town along the road past the Nog. |
The
hills are covered with nice villas and vineyards. |
When
weather in the Balkans would force an early cancellation of a mission, I would
have enough time to explore northern Italy a little. |
Lake
Garda was one of my favorite areas to visit. |
It
was August and the beaches of Lake Garda were packed with vacationers. |
More
Lake Garda, toward the northern end, I think. |
| Unfortunately,
things were usually closed by the time I got there or closed for August. This
is a castle/museum in Trent. |
|
|
This
was the back entrance to the castle/walled city at Soave (I think) |
Soave.

Verona,

| The
Arena di Verona, famous for large-scale outdoor stagings of grand opera. |
Props
for Aida at the Arena di Verona. |
Another
view of the Arena. |
|
| Unfortunately,
I did not get to attend any performances. |
