Here comes a rather
solemn introduction. Sorry for submitting you to reading it, but unfortunatelly this is the tone the word "journalism" sets. Journalism, as I saw it as an insider, wants to be a serious matter. Reliable. Heroic. Accurate mirror of reality. In fact it was rather dissapointing to learn how little journalism had to do with reality. Fiction is more real than the dulled half truths of what you read everyday in papers. Anyway, my aim is not to fume about journalism but to introduce my articles. I posted this collection of articles partly from self indulgence, partly from a need to signify, partly thinking that it might be of interest to document the development of a journalist. This is true but I suppose I also simply want to show off, to spread my wings and show what I can do. I see my journalistic endeavor up to now, July 1998, as having both good and bad sides. I realize that the same can be said of old '45 records, families, streets, beds, haircuts and just about anything more complex than an amoeba. As such it is a weak device, though it does work as a transition. Sorry. |
One of the good things about journalism was that it was a
useful way of learning the trade of organized writing. It
allowed me to get a bit of money while imposing
discipline and a respect for deadlines. It helped me to
build up my self confidence through the immediate
feedback editors and readers provided. As for the bad? Editing often distorted my writing, either because my words were mangled by fools, oops! editors, or because I would mangle or distort my own thoughts in self inflicted censorship, excising good material that I knew would keep the piece from ever being published. But there was another benefit. Journalism pointed a direction, helping me to both identify its limits and then to transcend them. I announce here that starting with July 1998 I will post a weekly column. I am doing this partially in response to the enormous amount of mail I received that was stimulated by my first New York Times article. Many readers were engaging and offered me topics and ideas that provoked me in the best way. Thanks for reading. The rest is much more enjoyable. |
