Mangonui

On the top north-east corner of the
North Island, Mangonui is one of those character-filled little townships that one
falls in love with at first sight.

Voted best in New Zealand.  Hmm, I wonder what the criteria for judging was? 
The fish was excellent, but the chips, in my opinion, left a lot to be desired.

Unfortunately, my visit to Mangonui was a brief one, with no time to explore the fascinating, historic buildings along the waterfront.  I guess it's as good a reason as any for a return visit.

The tranquility here is an great antidote for the stresses of travelling.  Make time to stop by and experience it for yourself.

The historic stonehouse and the beautiful Magnolia tree alongside, are another great reason to stop awhile.

Northern Countryside

A view of these volcanic cones practically hits you in the face, rising from the horizon as you travel south (I think) from Kaeo.  Because I wasn't paying enough attention, that's as close a reference point as I have!

 

Mangawhai

These cliffs separate the surf beach from the channel and wildlife reserve.  Large sand dunes are a feature of the area.

This channel was completely closed up a few years back.  Local man/machine power opened it up again, allowing access through the surf for small boats.

 

Mangawhai Surf Beach

A popular spot with a walking track further down the beach, which climbs up through coastal bush.  Native Rosella parrots are usually visible and the views of the surrounding coastline are awesome.
