CONCEPT.

The proposed development of the coastal area around the jetty of Kedah Pier is part of the strategy to assist in bringing back the life to the area. The design will be geared towards the general physical improvement, enhancing and providing wider social activities and economic oopportunities. To consider an improvement to the existing pier for local and tourist attraction.
 

GOALS.

• To enhance tourism potential of the overall precint and to one site in particular.
• To improve the existing condition of the area.
• To exploit the asset of Pulau Pinang.
• To prevent the urban blight of the downtown area due to suburban development.

OBJECTIVES.

• To inject new activities such as boating, water sport recreation, small retail activities, marina club, food arcade and  restaurant.
• Provision of proper sitting area, shades, public conveniences and recreational facilities.
• To take into consideration of the existing image and forms of the surrounding colonial buildings such as, height,colour, scale and propotion, materials and facade treatments. The historical character of Georgetown has contributed great tourist attraction to Penang as a whole and the consideration to take on the existing images and form will greatly harmonise the environment in the area.
• The provision of promenade and steps that leads to the sea will take the people closer to tha sea.
• To bring in the trishaws as part of an attraction to the area.
• Provision for local cultural show.
• Provision of local images and way of life.
• Promotion of local products such as local art and handicraft, Penang pewter, batik and etc.

THE PROPOSED RECREATION AND MARINA.

The proposed recreation and marina to the area is basically based on the potential of the area. The provision of new activities such extra shops, accomodation and restaurant are merely to act as a supporting activities.

• The potential of the area being the recreational place.
• Being an island, Penang has the water / sea to offer.
• Yachts from overseas used to visit Penang but it has no facilities to grow this activities.
• Penang has all the port facilities.
• The said pier has become an entry point to Penang, since Sir Francis Light landed there (Esplanade) on 17th. July, 1786.

SCOPE OF PROJECT.

The scope of the project is confined to the redevelopment of the existing Kedah Pier.

• To conduct a feasibility study on the proposed project and consequently prepare on brief.
• To undertake the design process to accomodate all the design stages in respect of proposal.
• To study and understand the technicalities involved in the design.
• To study various proposal and alternative relating to the building services to ensure the best, economical and most efficient method applicable.
