Neolithic Cultures

In China the remains of Banpo villages have been dated to about 5000 B.C.E.*  The Majiayao Culture was later, about 3000-2000 B.C.E. Dawenkou Culture began around 4500 B.C.E. and turned into Longshan Culture around 2500 B.C.E. During this time:

  • In Egypt:
    • Between 5000 and 4000 B.C.E. the Egyptian calendar was created with 360 days, 12 months of 30 days each
    • Around 3000 B.C.E Upper and Lower Egypt were united for the 1st and 2nd dynasties
    • Between 3000 and 2500 B.C.E. the Great Sphinx of Gizeh and Cheops Pyramid were built.

  • In the Middle East:
    • The earliest cities in Mesopotamia were founded around 5000 B.C.E.
    • 3500 to 3000 B.C.E saw the height of Sumerian civilization
    • Sumerian cuneiform writing was developed

  • In the Indus Valley the Harappan Civilization united the area from 3000 to 1500 B.C.E.

  • In Latin America the earliest date in preserved Mayan chronology is 3372 B.C.E.

*B.C.E. stands for "Before the Common Era", with the "Common Era" beginning in the year "1" as our current calendars go from "1" to 1999 C.E.
This means 5000 B.C.E. is a time about 7,000 years ago.
