Computers are often like Chinese takeaways, as soon as you've had one an hour later and you fancy another! I've been after a PC since 1996 and I have only had my wish granted this year when my lovely wife Susan decided it was about time that we had a better computer.

Before this, I had an Apple Macintosh Classic, which like anything new was great at first. But now it's beginning to show it's age.

Working with computers as part of my job and being somewhat technically minded, I decided to embark on building my own custom PC without the ridiculous price tags that most high street shops charge.

After spending several months checking out reviews of standalone PC's and seperate components (via PC Pro Magazine and Computer Buyer which are, by far the best two computer magazines on the shelves at this time) I decided to base my system around the following components...

  • IBM/Cyrix 6x86L P200+
  • QDI TX Jumperless MB
  • IBM Deskstar4 4.3Gb EIDE
  • Acer 24x EIDE CD-ROM (Smokin')
  • ATI 3D Pro Turbo + PC2TV (8mb ram)
  • Creative Labs Soundblaster 16
  • 32mb EDO RAM
  • Iiyama Vision Master 350 (Cool 15" monitor)
  • Windows 95 OSR2

As a system it performs brilliantly, much faster than anything I've used previously (the machines I work with are a pile of crap!). I haven't had much in the way of any hardware problems, just the occasional system crash that we're all too familiar with.

The main use of this computer is in the design of web pages (like this one!) and also as a programming tool, as I write programs in Visual Basic as well as HTML and JavaScript. I've seen quite a few HTML editors (my first page was written with "Notepad - the HTML editor for MEN!" until you discover all the carriage returns are missing!) in my time, nowadays the program I use constantly is HTML Writer by Kris Nosack, it's a small easy to use editor which can deliver great results!

The other use is playing games! My favourite games are MDK, Commanche 3, Dungeon Keeper, Theme Hospital and Lemmings.
