* The song above was written in 1891 by Queen Kapi'olani for her husband, King David Kaläkaua, while he was away visiting California. Unfortunately, he died in San Francisco, and never heard it. I'iwi Polena, a song on Kekuhi Kanahele's second CD, also uses the image of the I'iwi bird for a beloved. It might just be the most beautiful piece of music ever recorded. The CD is available online at Hawai'ian Music Island and elsewhere. It's an exceptional collection of music, written mostly by Kekuhi and her husband. Hawai'ian and English lyrics are included. Can you tell I'm a fan?
