Dr Who The first 3 doctors

'Knock, knock
-Who's there?
Dr
- Dr Who?
Yes thats right'

It is hard to a give a brief yet satisfactory description of any person or show, especcially for a show that has been around for over 30 years (and whose main character has been about for at least 20 times that and seen more of the universe than most sci-fi shows put together). I can but try.

Ninjabread's retelling of the legend of The Doctor ...

The Doctor, as he is known most fo the time, is of the race of Time Lords who come from the planet Gallifrey.
Being rather adventurous The Doctor did not like the idea of being stuck on one planet doing nothing very usefull while he had the ability to go anywhere in time and space. So nicking off with a TARDIS (Time and relative dimensions in space) he went to see what he could see. Besides being caught by the time lords and having the memory of how to operate the Tardis blocked for a time, where he was stuck on Earth being Scientific advisor to UNIT (United nations intelligence taskforce) and dealing with rather unimaginative and somewhat incompetant humans. Besides that hitch there have been a few hundred other live threatening and torturous, mindbending situations he's had to deal with but it usually works out in the end.

Of course how could one man (in terms of living being) get along with all this without some moral support? Not that he often actually says thankyou to the brave men and women who are his companions along his journeys but I'm sure he appeciates them. The Doctor has been accompanied by many companions and not all of them fared so well out of the deal, with a few of the dying or stuck millions of light years from Earth (or whever they happened to come from).
One companion that I have seen did seem to come out of her companionship with The Doctor rather well was Jo Grant. She actually ended up married to someone she met on an adventure, which utterly broke The Doctors heart. Well that's what I think anyway, if you have any other ideas on the last scene of 'The Green Death' please tell me. Of course this left a spot for Sarah Jane Smith to fill. What a great job she did (does, going to). I really do think she's a great character, a great role model too.

Besides all this The Doctor has had to go through many changes, most notibley a number of regenerations. Below I will list the different faces of The Doctor along with when that one was around and what companions were with him during that time. It's all in Chronological order from 1st to last (well as far as it is up to now).
Oh and a bit of boring 'real life' reality comes into the page here where I list the human actors names and birth dates and things like that.

The 1st Doctor -

William Hartnell
29 Adventures: An Unearthly Child - The Tenth Planet (1966)

Steven
Katarina
Sara
Dodo (?)
Polly
Ben
Name: William Hartnell
Born: 8 June 1908
Died: 24 April 1975
Ninjabread's comments: Unfortunately have not seen anything but about 10 seconds of footage and some sound bites but this Doctor sounds most interesting.

The 2nd Doctor -

Patrick Troughton
21 Adventures: The power of the Daleks (1966) - The War Games (1969)

Companions -
Polly
Ben
Jamie
Victoria
Zoe
Name: Patrick Troughton
Born: 20 March 1920
Died: 28 March 1987
Ninjabread's comments: I've seen most of two adventures with Patrick Troughton. A comical era with not too much worry about the enemies, although this is not exactely true he just gives the impression of knowing what to do most of the time. Definitely want to see more of this era!

The 3rd Doctor -

Jon Pertwee
24 Adventures: Spearhead from Space (1970) - Planet of the Spiders (1974)

Companions -
Liz
Jo
Sarah
Name: Jon Pertwee
Born: 7 July 1919
Died: 20 May 1996
Ninjabread's comments: I've seen most of the adventures in this era. If it weren't for my lack of seeing any other era of Doctor Who I would say this was one of the best eras. A more physical Doctor when it comes to dealing with hostile enemies and artistically mischievous sense of humour you can't help but be charmed by this one (well I can't. Oh and it helps if you like fancy clothes, funny cars, speedboats and gadgetry

The 4th Doctor -

Tom Baker
42 Adventures: Robot (1974) - Logopolis (1981)

Companions -
Sarah
Harry
Leela
K9
Romana I
Romana II
Adric
Nyssa
Tegan
Name: Tom Baker
Born: 20 January 1934
Ninjabread's comments: Only memories of watching this Doctor when I was very small remain. I remember the scarf and the Daleks but nothing else. I look forward to seeing some of this era very soon (thankyou to the nice people on the television who are showing the episodes in order, except when they leave the last episode of a story off and leave out three whole stories).
Actually I've seen about 6 stories now and I'm rather impressed. Actually quite happy to know that I can keep looking forward to what happens each week and be entertained.

The 5th Doctor -

Peter Davison
20 Adventures: Logopolis (1981) - The Caves of Androzani (1984)

Companions -
Adric
Nyssa
Tegan
Turlough
Kamellion
Peri
Name: Peter Davison
Born: 13 April 1959
Ninjabread's comments: Once again I have not seen any of this era. I would be inclined to say 'wasn't he the one in All Creatures Great and Small?' but that would not be fair. I look forward to seeing how The Doctor progresses in this era.

The 6th Doctor -

Colin Baker
11 Adventures: The Caves of Androzani (1984) - The Trial of a Time Lord (1986)

Companions -
Peri
Mel
Name: Colin Baker
Born: 8 June 1943
Ninjabread's comments: With fewer adventures and companions than previous Doctor's I really didn't know this era existed until I became interested in Doctor Who. I would like to see what the world is like where one can wear such a splash of colour....

The 7th Doctor -

Sylvester McCoy
12 Adventures: Time and the Rani (1987) - Survival, then made-for-Tv movie Doctor Who

Companions -
Mel
Ace
Name: Sylvester McCoy
Born: 20 August 1943
Ninjabread's comments: I have only seen this era by way of the beginning of the made-for Tv-movie. The Tardis looks quite interesting now (The most I've seen of it so far is the bed and drawers etc. that was seen in Planet of the Daleks in the 3rd Doctor era). I shall try and get a video and evaluate it then.

The 8th Doctor -

Paul McGann
1 Adventure: Made-for-TV-movie 'Doctor Who' (1996)

Companions -
Not sure if anyone in the movie counted
Name: Paul McGann
Born: 29 January 1959
Ninjabread's comments: I saw the movie before I became interested in Doctor Who. I was rather appalled by the story line and the representation of The Master. Now that I know more about Doctor Who I can't quite see the Master as some Arnold S. copy crossed with a reptile. Really why would The Doctor fall in love with some woman now? I mean he sure had his pick before (Jo Grant etc.). Maybe the American audience demanded somethign a bit different from this Doctor? Maybe it was just an attempt to make it appeal toa new audience in the 90's. Personally I've got hooked on Doctor Who by watching 1970's episodes ...
