One Christmas/Birthday, Kort got a mandolin. He and A. J. (who at the time only owned a cheesy electric guitar that ran on 2 9-volts and had a built-in amplifier) got the bright idea to get together and play some songs. After one or two times, A. J. remembered he was pretty bad at guitar. So, A. J. suggested they call mutual friend Costa Nikou to come and play guitar with them, and A. J. could use his guitar as a makeshift bass. A.J. called Costa from Kort's house, Costa took his guitar over, and Hindenburg was born. After playing together for a while, the guys decided that they needed a name. Since Kort had so expertly burnt the hair off his arm a few days before while he and A. J. were playing with a homemade hydrogen balloon, "Hindenburg" was a unanimous choice. (If you like, you can read the story of the armhair incident.)
Hindenburg remained a trio until one snowy November night, when Dale came with Kort and A.J. to Costa's apartment at CMU. They played for a while, and the band realized then that it was destined for greatness! 2 years and a few weeks since they were first formed, their debut gig was on July 27, 1996. Costa, Kort, and A. J. played at Linway United Presbyterian (Costa and A. J.'s church) in North Versailles, PA for a Saturday Night Service. Mutual friend Justin Duree joined the guys on backing vocals and rhythm tambourine. On April 19, 1997 the band appeared at The Cellar on the Penn State University campus and received a great response. Now a new chapter begins...
