Here is where I am going to place any recommendations as to software I think you may find beneficial (or good for wasting you time!). If the page gets full, I might have to order the page into categories, but this is unlikely to happen.
Slackware Linux is a full operating system and it can be found here. I would only recommend this for users with a bit of experience, but I found it damn easy to get running initially.
Wordperfect 8 is produced by Corel and is useful if you want to have a common interface that you are used to in windows. I use it for my word processing needs as it doesn't run away with all my system resources.
WINE is not an emulator, nor is it an alcoholic drink! What it does do is allow you to run MS Windows programs in your Linux environment. It is not a perfect program yet but it is getting better. It is suitable for those MS Windows programs you just cannot do without - I have managed to get MS Word 2000 running through WINE with some functionality, but I did get solitare and wordpad running properly.
Mozilla is the open source implementation of Netscape 6, but in my opinion if you want to use it try Galeon as it uses the same engine but is a damn site faster. It started of with the Netscape source being released for all to see, and improve upon. This, I believe, was scrapped and the code for Mozilla was created from scratch. It is still in development but nightly builds can be downloaded (I think the last one I tried was a 20Mb download) for trial. The most up-to-date build is not necessarily the most stable, but apart from the memory requirement of mozilla it is a good browser. Oh yes, you can 'skin' it as well - i.e. have a changeable interface over the browser to change the feel and appearance of it.
I'll stop there for now, but I'll try and keep updating this page as I try new stuff out.
If there is anything you think I should try then email me.
