(June 15, 2000)   HYPE FORMS NEW PRODUCTION COMPANY | UPCOMING MTV2 EUROPE DOCUMENTARY
The June 3, 2000 issue of Billboard magazine (pg.107) mentions Hype Williams forming a new production company:

"HYPE'S NEW COMPANY: Music video director Hype Williams has left H.S.I. Productions to launch his own production company, Instinct, based in New York. Connie Orlando is Instinct's executive producer, and Abdur Rahman is the company's representative."

MTV2 Europe has several music video documentaries lined up this month.  In addition to Directors Cut Week at the end of the month, they plan on showing a four-part documentary entitled Music On Screen: Three Decades Of The Music Video.  It is described as "an exclusive examination of the art, function and innovation of the music video."  Each episode airs at 10:00pm (UK Time) from June 15-18, 2000.  What's interesting is that the second episode focuses on American music video directors.  Episode Two: Spike Jonze and the American All-Stars, focuses on the work and influence of directors such as Spike Jonze, Hype Williams, and Mark Romanek.  I'm assuming that they will have interviews with the directors as well.

Spike Jonze and the American All-Stars (feat. Hype Williams) MTV Europe June 16 @ 10pm (UK time)
"This episode is dedicated to the American new-school, the brat-pack innovators that have changed the way we view the music video. In the Eighties music videos were generally big sets matched only by even bigger budgets - fresh ideas, however, were becoming less and less frequent. In the early nineties, young directors such as Spike Jonze and Roman Coppolla began to match the burgeoning DIY ethic of Grunge and Electronica with scratchy, lo-fi visuals, simple yet effective ideas and ironic conceptualization that drew inspiration from modern popular culture: Jonze's infamous 70's cop show spoof for the Beastie Boy's "Sabotage" remains a benchmark of this type of spontaneous, vibrant post-modernism. On the flipside, American directors such as Hype Williams and Mark Romanek have found new and far more effective ways to spend as much money as possible, by focusing on the personality of the artist and making them look, literally, a million dollars..."

(June 8, 2000)  HYPE SHOOTS NEW WYCLEF VIDEO IN TORONTO
According to MTV.com, Wyclef Jean was in a downtown Toronto club over the weekend to shoot a new video with Hype Williams.  The video for It Doesn't Matter is basically Wyclef in the year 1988 trying to get into a club.  WWF wrestler "The Rock" makes a cameo appearance in the video.  I had a chance to see behind-the-scenes footage on Canadian music station Musique Plus, and it showed a blue tinted scene where The Rock beats up on some guy.  Wyclef wears a white Kangol-style mink coat with matching hat, snake-skin pants, Mercedes-Benz emblem on a chain around his neck, true pimp style.
