(December
31, 2001 - January 1, 2002) YEAR-END REVIEW 2001
As the year comes to a close, it's
time to take a look back at the work of Hype Williams in 2001.
Hype directed roughly 14 new videos this year, including a few for pop
artists such as Stella Soleil (Kiss Kiss), Shelby Lynne
(Killin' Kind), and Jessica Simpson (A LIttle Bit);
as well as some for hip-hop artists he's worked with in the past: DMX
(Ain't No Sunshine), Busta Rhymes (What It Is &
Break Ya Neck), Babyface (There She Goes), LL
Cool J (Fatty Girl). My personal favorites include Killin'
Kind (Shelby Lynne), There She Goes (Babyface),
& Rock The Boat (Aaliyah). My least favorites
were Lay Low (Snoop Dogg) and Break Ya Neck (Busta
Rhymes). Hype also worked on other projects such as directing
high-profile commercials for Mountain Dew (feat. Busta Rhymes)
and a promo for the 2003 Toyota Matrix. 2001 was also a sad
year in Hype's career, with the plane-crash death of Aaliyah
following the shooting of her music video Rock The Boat in
Bahamas (which Hype directed). Hype will be quite busy in 2002,
with previously announced projects to develop an urban drama for UPN and
his movie deal with New Line Pictures.
(December
8, 2001) NAACP IMAGE AWARD NOMINATION
Hype Williams's video for Aaliyah's
Rock The Boat has been nominated for Outstanding Music
Video at the 33rd Annual NAACP Image Awards. Other
nominees in this category include All For You (Janet); Contagious
(Isley Bros.); Fallin' (Alicia Keys); You Rock My World
(Michael Jackson). The awards will be handed out February 23, 2002
and air sometime in March 2002 on Fox.
(November
16, 2001) DMX DVD TO BE RELEASED
DefJam
will be releasing a DMX DVD entitled Angel - One More Road To
Cross. The DVD will include live performance footage,
behind-the-scenes clips, and DMX's entire music video library!
Many of the videos included were directed by Hype Williams: Get At Me
Dog, How's It Goin' Down, What You Want, Ain't No Sunshine.
The video listing has not been released yet, so it is uncertain whether
the videos for Grand Finale (which was shot for the Belly movie
soundtrack) or Do You (which was released off of Funkmaster
Flex's album) will be included. The DVD comes out on December 18.
(November
3, 2001) 2003 TOYOTA MATRIX
Hype Williams is involved with a
unique marketing campaign for the all-new 2003 Toyota Matrix
cross-over utility vehicle. The campaign allows visitors to toyota.com
to preview the new vehicle by creating their own music video on the
internet using a program called StudioMatrix. The program includes
sample audio tracks and visuals from a Matrix music video that was shot
by Hype Williams. The user mixes their own music video and submits
it as part of a contest that runs from October 11, 2001 to January 23,
2002. The videos will be voted by visitors to the site. The
winner (through the voting process and a random draw) will win their
very own 2003 Matrix. The Hype Williams-directed music video/promo
is available to download at the StudioMatrix
website in two sizes in Quicktime format:

(October
11, 2001) AALIYAH VIDEO PREMIERES
The Hype Williams-directed video
for Aaliyah's Rock The Boat has finally premiered on BET.
The video had been postponed a few weeks ago for last minute edits, but
finally made its premiere Tuesday night during the half-hour
behind-the-scenes special Access Granted: Aaliyah Rocks The Boat.
The footage was shot on location in Bahamas and Florida during the video
shoot, just days before Aaliyah's death. The video is filled with
lots of water and cloud imagery, and ends with Aaliyah swimming up from
the bottom of a pool, almost looking like she is going into the
clouds. The BET Access Granted special will re-air on October 16
at 8pm. The video also premiered with BET's
106 & Park last night.

(October
8, 2001) VITA VIDEO |
BET ACCESS GRANTED: AALIYAH
It was reported on MTV.com
that Hype Williams shot a new video for Vita's Justify My Love
in early July. The video, a remake of the Madonna song, recreates
the original song's controversial video with Vita seducing up to two
guys at once on a bed and strutting down a hallway. The video has
apparently premiered on MTV already in the past few weeks.
According to Aaliyahonline.com,
BET Access Granted featuring Aaliyah's Rock The Boat
will air on October 9 and 16 at 9:00pm on both nights. It's not
sure whether or not the special will actually air, as it has been
postponed several times in the past month due to re-editing. The
Aaliyah fan site also posts that the video will make its premiere on BET's
106 & Park this afternoon (Monday), but also lists Ocotber
10 as a possible premiere date.

(October
7, 2001) AALIYAH VIDEO PREMIERE RESCHEDULED
BET
did not air the episode of Access Granted that featured
behind-the-scenes footage of Aaliyah's Rock The Boat last
week as previously announced. It was pushed back one week to allow
for re-editing of the video. According to Aaliyahonline.com,
the video will definitely have its premiere this Monday (October 2) on BET's
106 & Park. No word yet on whether or not the Access
Granted episode will ever air, as it contained footage of Aaliyah's last
few days alive.
