The teenage power pop band Ash was formed in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland in 1992 by Tim Wheeler (vocals/guitar), Mark Hamilton (bass) and Rick McMurray (drums); three schoolmates with a passion for Star Wars and punk-infused pop rock. Several critically acclaimed U.K. singles and a tour with Elastica led the trio to sign with Reprise Records, who released their U.S. debut album, Trailer, in 1995. The group's 1996 follow-up, 1977, takes its title from the year that Star Wars was released; it was followed in 1997 with a live album recorded in Australia.
