11/04/01: The Longest Day:
This morning I come to the realization that I really really really hate high
school marching band. Not only is it stupid and a waste of time, mostly
due to 'over-the-hill' band directors and crazed, psycho instructors, but it's
also filled with incredibly clueless high school individuals. Thank
goodness I was only there to watch yesterday.
For those of you who know nothing about marching band, I
offer you this, marching band can be the best thing that ever happened to you,
until you leave. Once it's over, you realize just how much of your life
you wasted on those years that once seemed so precious. Not only does it
become your life, it becomes everyone else's as well, and really it all just
turns into a big group of 150+ losers with nothing better to do with their time.
In retrospect, I would have much rather have stayed in bed all those long and
lonely mornings.
Now I propose a question. What did marching band ever
do for me? Aside from nearly ruining my life sophomore year, and giving me
one giant headache and a nasty taste in my mouth senior year, it brought me
nothing. Here I am today trying to figure out what I'm going to do with my
life once the next 4 years of college days are over, and nothing seems to
involve beating a piece of plastic with a wooden stick. Spending the
entire day, and I mean entire (4:45am Saturday-1:00am Sunday), with the marching
band brought nothing more then harsh memories and regrets that only turn into
pure shame. Watching my former section perform so disgracefully was
perhaps the most pathetic point in my life. What the hell was I doing
there? Well that's simple. I still have a friend or three left in
the marching band and being there was the only time I ever get to see them.
And I would also like to contribute this to the equation, no matter how out of
place it may seem to you. GIRLS SUCK!
Anyhow, now that all that marching band bologna is over for
the year, I doubt that I will be returning in the same capacity ever again.
No more bus trips for me, no more staying from an insane hour in the morning
until an insane hour at night, watching a group of people who I really don't
know play music in a sub-par fashion. I hate marching band, and I hate how
it ruined my life.
And now for today's events, I will be attending an open house
at the San Francisco Renegades Senior Drum
and Bugle Corps home base in South San Francisco. I will be drumming
and having a grand old time marching in this marching band. The old fogies
are great to hang out with and it's always good to hear about their stories of
how drunk they got after a performance. I love marching band!
