When I graduate and get some experience, I want to be in Management at a television station or a record company. In television, I would prefer to be affiliated with a cable channel or the WB, Fox or even the UPN stations. Simply because they are all growing and aren't just the same old status quo as the big three (ABC, NBC, and CBS) tend to be. I want to be involved with new and fresh ideas! Since I want to work in television, I am a Telecommunications major, with a minor in Political Science, and I am already on the road to success as 22 year old college senior! I have already had some experience with working in "the real world". I have had the distinct opportunity to work at a television station and have been part of their continued success.
It's amazing really! For my senior year at Northrop High School I became a part of a pilot program they called the Career Connection. This was a program which allowed for everyday students to go out during the school day and work in a real workplace that does what they plan on doing for their career. I want to be a part of a broadcasting corporation, so I was given the opportunity to intern for the year at WPTA-TV, 21 Alive. They apparently loved me so much that they hired me for some time in order to give me a paycheck that was wasted away on books! WPTA-TV/Channel 21 is the local ABC affiliate for Fort Wayne and some surrounding cities, including parts of Ohio. Here I met many wonderful on-air and behind the scenes personalities, while experiencing a normal broadcast day. I started out in the Production Department under Jim Turcovsky, and then went over to the Programming Department. I stayed in the Programming Department, under Jan D'Italia, all through the second semester of my senior year, and then I was offered a job for the summer. So, two summers ago I worked with these people, while holding much responsibility for letting the viewers know what's going to air on any given day. While this may sound like an easy task, the truth is far from it. There are many things that go on during a work day in my job, it was always keeping me on my toes. From talking to people at the American Broadcasting Corporation, Inc. (ABC) , to working with those at Nielsen Media Research and TV Data, I handled many things in my tenure at WPTA-TV. So to say the least, I got one heck of an education and a pretty good workout trying to keep up with changes coming in hourly!
