My Flamingo Collection

My flamingo collection has grown since I moved to Florida in 1987. Those gorgeous pink birds fit in with my tropical decorating scheme, so over the years I have acquired more and more of them. The pictures are too numerous to put on this webpage but they are all featured in various albums in my Webshots, all linked below in the room-by-room tour.

ALL OVER THE HOUSE: Who says flamingos are tacky? Not me ... I think of them as fine art! One favorite, "Where the Wild Things Wade" by Susanna Spann, was bought in April, 2001 at the Melbourne Art Festival, a very classy juried art show. I have wonderfully colorful framed posters from the Art Festival and many other prints, not to mention many fine works of literature with flamingo covers. All of my classy and very artsy flamingos can be seen in my Webshots album called "Art and Literature - Flamingo Style".

THE KITCHEN: I have a collection of Moon Over Miami Fiesta pieces plus an abundance of plates, bowls, shot glasses, placemats ... you name it, I've got it in either the kitchen or the bar area of my home. They're all immortalized in two different Webshots albums: the "Nesting in the Kitchen" album plus the fun-to-visit "Here's to the Pink Flamingo" album which has a real party atmosphere.

Squirt and the pink bird THE BATHROOM: The piece that started it all - a pink flamingo toilet plunger - is still one of my favorites. When she was young, my cat Squirt decided to befriend it. Isn't she cute posting behind it? The guest bath at our first house was always the flamingo haven, but since moving to our current home, the master bath is now the pinkest room. There are only two flamingo items in the guest bath - two framed prints - but my master bathroom makes up for that lack of pink! Take a look at everything in the master bathroom in my Webshots album entitled "Flocking to the Tropical Bathroom", and trust me when I say there is indeed quite a flock in there!

Some of the pictures in that album are of the towels that reside in the linen closet. And speaking of closets, attached to the master bath is the master closet with my overflowing pink wardrobe. All the clothing can be seen in the "A Very Pink Wardrobe" album. If you look down you'll see all of the shoes, slippers and sandals that are stored in that same closet, plus a quick trip to my dresser will allow you to enjoy the sock collection: visit the "Flamingo Feet" album to see everything that I wear on my feet. Take a look at the "Beads, Baubles and Eyewear" album - it's full of bling - pink bling that is! Then there are all of the purses, totes and luggage - I call them "Flamingos To Go" and I take at least one of them with me no matter where I'm going each day.

THE MASTER BEDROOM: There is a family of plush flamingos sitting among lots of fluffy pillows on the bed, prints all around the room, photo frames, all kinds of mingoes sitting and standing around, even one 4' high metal flamingo who I call Reba because of her long pink rebar legs. Visit the "Boudoir Birds" album and you'll see it's a jungle in there ... a very pink jungle!

OUTSIDE and OTHER PLACES: In addition to the flamingos inside, I have quite a few hearty birds who brave the humidity, thunderstorms, hurricanes and mosquitoes that are prevalent in Florida. They hang by the pool, hide in the tropical foliage, a few swim in the pool and some sit with us on the covered patio. Go to "The Great Outdoors" to see them all.

Take a look at the album called "All Those Extras" to see the plethora of pink that I couldn't categorize elsewhere. There is also an album just for the note cards, note pads, pens, pencils, anything needed to "Take a Note" in the home office of a flamingo lover.

Then there is the Flamingo Birthday Chair, a very cool beige, cream, taupe and black flamingo fabric recliner that I got from my husband on my 49th birthday .. a complete surprise, it was sitting in the living room when I got home that day. It deserves a whole album by itself because it's so special, and anyone who comes to visit (especially flamingo collectors) get to pose in the chair for this album.

HO HO HO: We love Christmas at my house and we decorate inside and out. I have a skinny tree dedicated to my pink ornaments plus I spread pink holiday cheer all through the house with tropical-themed accents. The newest ornaments can be seen in the "2006 and Beyond" album, while the oldest and dearest can be seen in the "Ornaments thru 2005" album. Hop on over to the "Flamingo Christmas Decorations" album to see the rest of the festive collection. I can't wait to decorate my new mini-tabletop-tree made of sparkling turquoise tinsel-like fronds! Santa will be able to find MY house for sure.

A flamingo collection can be quite diverse. One thing I like to "collect" is flamingo paintings and sculptures on my acrylic nails compliments of my talented nail tech Michelle. She adds a new design to my "digits" every two weeks and I have all the designs displayed in two "Digit"al Nail Art albums. Get it, digital pics of my decorated digits! I crack myself up. But seriously, visit both albums: for the current designs go to the 2006/2007 album and for all my previous designs visit the 2004/2005 album. The only bad thing about this collection is they disappear every two weeks ... the good thing is I don't have to store them or display them so they're easy to collect!

The best collection of all is the group of flamingo collecting friends I've made since 2002. I've visited Pam in North Carolina, Cindy in Minnesota (she took me to an awesome restaurant in Wisconsin, all decorated with flamingos), Agi in Pennsylvania who I call the Empress of Pink, she has soooo much pink stuff, and our Queen Rosemary in Florida, and all of those ladies plus several others have visited me. We have fun chatting about our collections and meeting as a group once a year in a different town to shop for flamingos together.

We've been to the Florida version of Venice twice, went on a Nassau cruise and saw the talented flamingos march at Ardastra Gardens (three albums for that trip, scroll down my Webshots page until you see the Bahamas Cruisin' Bash albums), converged on Key West (four albums for that wild trip ... scroll down Webshots until you see Wild Wild Key West titles), livened up Las Vegas (stayed at the Flamingo of course!), and this year we will be traveling to Tarpon Springs, Florida to shake our tail feathers in that quaint Greek town. Visit my Webshots albums for pictures of all the trips and to meet the wonderful women in the group.

As you can see, I'm an equal-opportunity collector, I like to have flamingos (and FlamiGals) everywhere! Most people think I have enough of them, but if I decide I want more flamingo collectibles, I'll visit Off The Deep End's Flamingo Mania, or the Flamingo Mango site (run by a wonderful lady named Elaine who is in our traveling group) or the Uptown Flamingo cyberstore. Sometimes I go to those sites just to browse ... I never know what I'll find that might fit perfectly into my existing collection.
