Electronic Warfare
ELS
The purpose of electronic warfare or EW is to exploit the use of the electromagnetic spectrum for our forces while denying its use to our adversaries. TI's Electronic Warfare department was headquartered in Colorado Springs and had nearly 1,000 personnel engaged in the design, development and manufacturing of EW equipment. Our major program was the Emitter Location System (ELS) for the German Electronic Combat Reconnaissance (ECR) Tornado Aircraft. It consisted of radar receivers and computers to locate and identify any radar directed weapons and display their precise locations to the aircrew. This information could then be used to avoid or cue HARM anti radar missiles or other weapons to destroy the radar directed weapons.
GEN-X
Another major program was GEN-X, a micro miniature EW system for protecting aircraft from radar guided weapons. In a package only 6 inches long and 1.4 inches in diameter was a complete EW system. It had a transmit/receive antenna, a radar receiver, a techniques generator, power supply, jamming transmitter and airframe. When an aircraft came under attack by a radar guided missile, the aircrew ejected the GEN-X which simulated the radar return from the aircraft, luring the missile away from the aircraft. Other products were a computer for the F-15 aircraft's Radar Warning Receiver, Memory Loader Verifiers, Launch Computers for HARM missiles on Navy aircraft, HARM test equipment and multi channel radar receivers for EA-6B Prowler aircraft.
After successfully tying up the MLV market, I became the business Development manager in charge of marketing all of TI's EW products. I over saw a systems group of 25-30 personnel and a $4-6M budget for marketing, R&D and proposal writing. It was a big, exciting, successful team effort and we reached annual revenues of nearly $200M per year. I was in the middle of everything, composing viewgraphs, designing brochures, traveling the US, Europe and Asia giving presentations, leading proposal teams, writing white papers, etc. I also developed TI's 10-year strategic technology/marketing/financial plan for EW that was part of TI's overall reengineering of its defense operations.
