A Trip to a Winery

We went to the Santa Rita Winery near Santiago with Adella and Daddy during their visit. The winery was started
in the late 1800s, and the owners kept the property's house, now an historical monument. This 200+ year old home
is built in the country style with thick adobe walls and a tile roof that extends to cover wide verandas along
the front and around the formal garden it partially surrounds. 120 men were hidden in the basement during the war
to gain freedom from Spain. One of their wines is called 120 in honor of this piece of history. |

We enjoyed a fine lunch in the restaurant now housed here, and after our tour checked out the wine shop in its
cool basement. |

Artie framed this picture of an area of grape vines on the property with some of the older equipment that used
to be used in making the wines. By coincidence, this winery buys some of its grapes from Franz and Maria Elena. |

Santa Rita has a mixture of old and new, and it produces a range of wines for both the domestic and export markets.
This bottling machine washes, fills and corks the bottles. We also saw old and modern vats and old and modern cellars
filled with barrels or bottles of wine. |
This cellar is a national landmark that is still used to age fine wines in barrels of French
oak.
