    North Melbourne is a quiet residential area just north of the city centre. The two YHA hostels are here.

    Backpackers Hostels - St Kilda (6 km south of the city centre) 

    St Kilda is a beachside suburb with a slightly bohemian party atmosphere.

    Fitroy is a grungy suburb near Melbourne University with a number of alterantive bar ans restaurants.

    Chapel Street in South Yarra, some 4km south of the city has a long strip of classy fashion shops, restaurants, pubs and nightclubs for Melbourne's young hip crowd.

    NEAR MELBOURNE 
     
  • Great Ocean Road makes for a very specacular drive. The Surf Coast, which lives up to its name, is at the beginning of this great drive (starts 100km southwest of Melbourne)
  • Phillip Island & Penguin Parade (100km southeast of Melbourne)
  • Mount Dandenong and the Yarra Valley Wineries (50km east of Melbourne)
  • Mornington Peninsula and its wineries (50-100km south of Melbourne)
  • Ski Resorts - Mt Buller, Falls Creek, Mt Hotham.(3-5 hours northeast from Melbourne)
  • Wilson's Promontory National Park occupying an entire peninsula has few roads and many long walks, some days long.(4 hours southeast of Melbourne)
  • Echuca on the Murray River is an historic riverport town. (3 hours north of Melbourne)
  • Historic Gold Rush Towns of Ballarat (100km west) and Bendigo (115km northeast).
  • Grampians National Park encompasses a low range of mountains (400km west of Melbourne)
  • WHERE TO TRAVEL NEXT  

    Visit Tasmania 
    Australia's cool but scenic island state with well preserved old colonial atmosphere. 

    Travel west to Adelaide 
    Go either: 

  • via the coast along the spectacular Great Ocean Road and through Warrnambool and Portland on the windswept far west coast of Victoria; or 
  • directly through the historic gold mining town of Ballarat and the Grampians National Park
  • Travel north-east to Sydney 
    Go either: 

  • directly along the Hume Freeway making a detour into Canberra, Australia's purpose built capital city, and perhaps the Ski Resorts in Victoria or New South Wales; or 
  • via the coast stopping at Wilson's Promontory National Park and numerous cool weather coastal fishing towns in southern New South Wales. 
  • Travel north-west to Mildura via Bendigo
