Day 1 - Jerusalem

Inside the The Church of the Holy Sepulcher, are several areas, each the realm of a different denomination. One of the most important is the spot on which Christ was laid after being taken from the cross (Right). The Eastern Orthodox Church protects this spot. A cleric of the Church stands in front of the entrance and allows you access. One must bow to enter. The height of the entrance ensures it.

It is striking to witness the effect that being in this place has on those who enter. Two men from Germany in front of me crossed themselves and were visibly moved.

(Below) Behind an iron gate is this area of the church, operated by the Roman Catholic Church. The contrast from one area to the next is striking. It is as though one is in different churches of different ages and differing maintenance.
