Corofin, County Clare

Corofin is my adopted Irish home town. I stopped there for lunch on my first trip to Ireland and was impressed to where I wanted to visit again which I have on every subsequent trip. In recent years I have stayed at the Corofin Village Hostel for the last four or five days of my vacation. Corofin is located nine miles west of Ennis and only one hour west of Shannon Airport requiring no long drive to the airport for your departure home.

MainStreet

In addition to the Village Hostel there are several B&B's nearby. There are also several locations offering thatched Irish cottages available for rent. The cottages accomodate up to eight persons and can bring the cost of lodging way down for three or four couples traveling together.

Rental Cottages

Lake and river fishing is nearby. Arrangements for permits, boats and gear for fishing on Lake Inchiquin may be made at Burkes store on main street.

Galway and Connemara to the north and Limerick to the east are easy day trips from Corofin. Doolin, the traditional Irish music center of Ireland is one hour west. Visit the smoke house in Lisdoonvarna on the way to Doolin. Lisdoonvarna hosts a senior singles gathering in the late summer, matchmakers and all.

A must trip is north thru the Burren area to Ballyvaughn for a bowl of seafood chowder at Monks pub. On the drive up look for one of the best preserved Dolmens in Ireland. There is also a perfume factory in the Burren area.

This year I visited The Biddy Early Brewery, a brew pub located in Inagh, about a thirty minute drive south of Corofin. Mr.Garvey the proprietor brews several beers including a fine dark stout appropriately named Black Biddy.

Corofin has about four hundred residents and nine pubs each with their own personality. Great pub food is available at many of the pubs all day. There are several restaurants offering dinner daily. Several years ago the seafood chowder served at Kennys Drinking Emporium was voted the best served in Ireland.

For persons with Clare roots, the County Clare Heritage Center is located in the village. If you are without a car, bus and taxi service is available to Ennis where bus connections may be made for day trips or continuing transportation. If you are staying at self catering accomodations, there are five or six grocery stores located on the main street.

Stop in Corofin for several days. Walk the main streets and visit the pubs. Enjoy a bowl of Irish stew along with a pint of Murphys and good conversation at The Corofin Arms.

See you there.
