Kilrush and Kilkee, County Clare

Main Street, Kilrush

I entered Co. Clare on the twenty minute ferry trip across the Shannon from Tarbert, Co. Kerry to Killimer. Kilrush is just a short drive from the ferry terminal at Killimer and an ideal base from which to travel north along the coast or south to Kerry and Cork.

Kilrush is a market town on the Shannon estuary. It has a modern marina where tour boats are available for dolphin watching trips. A trip to Scattery Island is worthwhile. The island is located two miles from Kilrush and has one of the oldest Monastic sites in Ireland. The round tower located on the island is the highest in Ireland and is surrounded by six churches. Visit the Heritage Center and discover the effects of the Great Famine on the local area.

The Inis Cathaigh Hotel offers attractive rooms at reasonable rates. There are many B & Bs and other guest facilities available in Kilrush. Good food is available at the many pubs and restaurants in town.

Kilkee is located ten miles west of Kilrush. It is one of Irelands premier tourist centers. Kilkee is situated on the Atlantic coast facing a one mile sand beach. The beach is warmed by the Gulf Stream and is considered one of the safest beaches in Ireland. There are dramatic cliff walks at both ends of the beach.

The Kilkee Hostel offers nice accomodations for about ten dollars a night. It is located close to the beach. If you prefer the services of a hotel, try Halpins.
