Philippines

I traveled throughout the Philippines while I was stationed in Okinawa. Here are some of my photos Even though I don't present a lot of photos here. In the coming months I will be presenting numerous others.

The Philippines, a possession of the United States during the early part of the century was given independence in 1945 by Franklin Roosevelt. Before then The Philippines was considered to become a sovereign State of the Union, such as New York or California. Since the distance from the US and the inborne threat of Colonialism, it was rejected.

WWII, seen many changes to The Philippines, the Jeepney, once a transport vehicle for the US military, now has been transformed into a public transportation mode. Many relics are left behind in the Philippines and the students are taught about the great American Douglas McArthur. In fact, many children know more about him, then their American counterparts. A national highway has been named for him.

There are 7,100 seperate islands to the Philippines and many dialects and religions. Of which, Tagalog and English are prevailant. The Philippines is the only major English speaking nation in Asia, and the only nation whose religion is primarily Christian.

In 1991, Mt. Pinatubo, put an end to the longstanding arguement about us bases in the Philippines. Over 27,000 people lost their job in one day. 7 years later, the suffering still lingers. Poverty is still rampant but, the people hold strong to their faith that one day and end will come to it all.
