Mount Kinabalu - Malaysia
MOUNT KINABALU |
Mount Kinabalu lies in the North of Borneo and is the highest mountain in South-East Asia with a summit height of 4102m. The Mountain is contained within a National Park, with the park gate at 1900m, the ascent proceeds from the gate to the Laban Rata "Hut at 3450m and thereafter the next morning to the summit and back. |
The first view where we really saw the mountain, from the Fairy Garden Hotel, situated on the main road near the park gate. |
The pitcher plant (Nepenthes) which proliferates in the higher reaches of the mountain's forests. This is the best known of a few carniverous plants found in the area, with insects (or even mammals) being caught in the pitcher and slowly consumed by the fluid it contains.... mmm.. lovely!! |
Most "summiteers" try to attain the summit in time for the sunrise although once clear of the forest at Laban Rata you're pretty sure to get a decent view and wont be jostling for position with the others on the small summit peak. |
Once the sun is up the views over the summit plateau are pretty stunning... and its a damn sight warmer as well! |
