East Asia: Land of the very modern and rapidly disappearing tradition

Pig's head at a school's opening ceremony, Seoul

East Asia is a great place to work and explore for a few weeks, or even a few years, as I did in Korea. If you want an adventure, and can tolerate some goofiness and occasional exasperation, this is the region for you. Although the English teaching gravy train has slowed down a bit since the currency crises of 1997, there is still plenty of work available, and while you're there, you'll have plenty to see and do! You'll marvel at the talking payphones in Japan, the decked out elevator girls of Seoul's department stores, huge skyscrapers in Shanghai, and the madness of Taipei's traffic. Although the old and tradition are slowly disappearing, there is still a lot to see in the countryside. Rural Korea is filled with beautiful temples, Japan has stunning beaches, there is plenty of hiking in Taiwan, and of course, in China, there's the Great Wall. So enjoy the old antiquities during the day, and then party at night, that is, if you don't burn your retinas from staring at all the blaring and blinking neon signs!
