If there were one region in the world I'd love to spend an unlimited amount of time in, it would be Southeast Asia. Some the friendliest, kindest, and most welcoming people in the world have been here. Unfortunately, mass hordes of tourists and parasites posing as "backpackers" are starting to spoil SE Asia, but there are still glorious spots to see if you want to get off the beaten path. I'd have to say Hoi An, Vietnam, and Lake Toba, on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, are my favorites. Some areas that I went to a few years ago are now in turmoil because of political crises, but overall this is a safe, friendly region. Just use common sense, prepare for your journey, and get an update on "iffy" areas before you wander that way.
