Mom was quite anxious on the Sunday night and told a few friends that when she emailed them that night. Dad had Unca Dean and Uncle John McHendry and his son, Grant, came to dad and mom's home - where I now live too - to watch the world cup soccer final. They were a bit worried too that I would arrive during the game, but mom eventually went to bed at about 10:30 pm. She woke up at exactly - well, according to their clock anyway, quarter to 1 in the morning, when her waters broke.
Granny and Grandad were phoned and Grandad came over to sleep at Dad and Mom's house so that Jordan - he's my big brother - wouldn't be alone. Granny was going to video me being born so she hopped in the car with Mom and Dad and off we went to the hospital. Mom says it was very quiet at the Pretoria Gynaecological Hospital when they got there. Sr Sue King was called to examine mom. Mom later found out that Sr Sue had gone to bed at the same time as her, so they were both quite tired! Anyway, Sr Sue said that I wasn't quite ready to make my appearance yet, so Mom, Dad and Granny trundled off home again to catch up on some sleep.
Mom says she didn't get much sleep since she kept wondering how far apart her contractions were. Eventually, at about 10 am, Dad, Mom and Granny set off for the hospital again. Mom says she felt kind of weird, doing things this way, since Jordan had been born quickly and I was taking my time. Mom had to cancel a lunch appointment so popped around to Aunty Jenny Mchendry's to do that and then deliver some work she had done for DPM, before that journey to the hospital.
Eventually, after pacing the corridors of the hospital and it's grounds, Mom asked Sr Sue if Dad, Granny and her could go for a walk a block away to the shopping center. Sr Sue said she would quickly examine mom first. Sr Sue decided to give mom some pills to help me move from my warm and cosy womb. Once finished, Sr Sue said everyone could go.
Mom says she tried to walk across the room to get her shoes, but suddenly the contractions hit *hard* and that was it! I had decided to make my entrance! No walking around malls when I was about to be born!! Mom got into the birthing bath and laboured there for the last while. This time, Dr Dirk didn't make the drive over from his offices, until after I made my very quick appearance!
I was born on a that sunny Monday afternoon of the thirteenth of July 1998, at quarter to three. 18 months and one day after big brother Jordan was born!
I spent a week in hospital, alongside my mom's bed, because I contracted yellow jaundice. I was placed under lights for a few days until I received the all-clear from the paediatrician, Dr Du Toit. Mom loved me right from the beginning, from the tip of my toes to the crown of my head!
I am very alert and love to see what is going on around me. I don't sleep much in the day at all, so there is a lot of time for observing. Of course, as long as somebody is holding me. That's what I prefer: lots of love and attention and cuddles. My colic is eased by being held and, after all, I am only this small once in my life!
When I was only about a month old, a very special lady came into our lives. We call her Miss Letty.
Before we knew it, it was time to go home again. And I think that that trip was where I left my colic!! Suddenly, when I arrived home, I didn't have colic anymore!! I am SO grateful!
When I woke up one morning, soon after arriving back, there was this enormous glittering tree in the lounge! Wow! Mom told me that it was a Christmas tree and that soon it would be Christmas. I could see that everyone was busy getting ready for Christmas and there was such excitement in the air. I just knew this was a happy and good time of the year. Then, one morning early, mom and dad plonked me in front of a whole lot of similarly covered objects. They told me these were my Christmas presents! I was so intrigued. Mom helped both me and Jordan open all our presents. Then we went to Granny and Grandad's house and there were more presents! We opened those too and, after lunch, we went to Grandpa and Grandma's house and there were even more presents!! What a day we had! Thank you Jesus for being born!!
Another exciting day was the day I learned to crawl. Mom and Granny videoed the whole thing! I suddenly decided to move from one area to another and discovered the art of crawling. I leopard crawl mostly, but now and again I will experiment and crawl properly. There is no stopping me now! I have even progressed to the point that I am pulling myself up onto things and mom says I will soon be cruising! I am so excited about this!
I have also grown two teeth. My bottom two teeth are growing by the day and I think my top two teeth are on their way out. I had a bad experience the other day. I fell out the back door. I was trying to follow my big brother but I didn't realise that there was a step and I don't know about steps yet! Plonk! I landed on my chin and my bottom teeth cut into my lip. I looked terrible and bled and bled. Mom and dad were ever so upset and I let them know I was upset too. They helped ease my pain though and two days later I was okay again! One of these days, I will be able to follow Jordan out of that door without hurting myself...!
I am learning how to eat as well. I am not always so sure that I like the tastes I am tasting, but so far enjoy pureed peaches and creamed oats.
Well, many moons have come, been and gone since my Mom updated this page! I have already celebrated my second birthday! Mom promises to do better, but in the meantime, here are some photos from my 2nd birthday party! Enjoy!
My mommy will write more about me as time goes by, so please come back and visit me? She even said that hopefully, by next time, there will be lots more photos of me!
Would you like to go back to the homestead in the meantime?
