This was one of many waterfalls we saw on the "Road to Hana"--a 55 mile road on Maui with dozens of 90 degree turns, and many times speeds of 10 miles per hour. The drive takes you to beaches, through rainforests, and ends at a tiny town that you would miss if you didn't have a guidebook. It takes hours to complete the drive, which we started at sunrise. We rented a Jeep for the day, which made it especially fun when it was raining!
This black beach is at Wai' anapanapa State Park.
Here you can get an idea of what the road "past Hana" looks like--at times it was unpaved, very bumpy, and quite deserted! Most travelers turn around once they reach Hana, but we continued on, seeing all of desolate south Maui. It took us several hours to go about 50 miles, but it was a great and beautiful adventure.
If you look carefully, you can see the indentation of the road we had just been on...
