The Caribbean Coast of Colombia is a spectacular place quite different from the rest of Colombia. The mentality of the people, the Costenos, is very relaxed and they are never in a hurry. People from Medellin and Bogota claim Costenos of being lazy and wasting their time for that reason. The Spanish spoken is more difficult to understand as it is spoken very fast and often the s is cut off and replaced by an h sound.
The cities of Barranquilla, Santa Marta and Carthagena are located at the Caribbean Coast. Especially Carthagena is a city that should not be missed for its beauty and its atmosphere. The city, with around 700.000 citizens, can be compared to European Venezia or Paris. It is Colombia?s most fascinating city and the Colombians are very proud of it. The old part of the city, the old town, is spectacular with it old buildings, architecture, churches, plazas, palaces with their overhanging balconies. Thick walls built to protect it against enemies surround the old town.
From Cathagena you can take a trip to Islas del Rosario, which consists of 27 small islands, and Playa Blanca that is located on the island of Baru. This trip is highly recommended as the area is beautiful and amazing. |
