CLIMATE: "RUSSIAN RIVIERA"
There is a great misconception shared by most of the world, especially the United States, in regard to climate for southern Russia and Ukraine.
Most tend to think of Siberia, and thoughts of frozen ground all year long.
The sheer size of this area does indeed allow for weather such as Siberia in the north, but the southern lands are blessed with an entirely different climate similar to Southern Europe. The southern coast of the Crimea is very unique in climate.
Mountain barriers shield the coast from the winds of the north, and give the area a subtropical, dry climate with a non-freezing sea in winter, and warm southern sea breezes in summer.
It is more closely related to the climates of Southern France and California. |
Average temperature in January is +4.3 C. July +24 C.

The Crimea primarily experiences two seasons: cool and warm. The warm season runs from May until October. Summers are dry and warm, with a cooling effect from the gentle sea breezes during the day. Sea temperature averages +23 C during the warm season, and many tourist enjoy the beaches of the Black Sea.
May, June, September and October are the most comfortable for hiking and all outdoor activities.
Winters are mild, and snow is rare for the southern coast of the Crimea, although the mountain tops are snow covered during December until April.
Hiking and snow skiing during these months is very enjoyable as a result of the dry climate.
One can actually view two seasons in one, as Flowers begin blooming in late January on the coast, while the mountains still retain their snow covered peaks.
A short drive by car takes you from the spring like weather of the coast to the frozen waterfall Uchan-su, the highest waterfall in Ukraine.
Crimea is a popular place for movie-makers. Here it is possible to film severe tundra, woods of Alaska, Rocky Mountains, jungle and tropical beach in one day, not driving off further than on 20 - 30 kilometers.
Especially beautiful are blooming flowers in the Crimean Mountains. In spring all the glades are covered with multi-colored carpet of flowers. There are about 100 species growing in the Crimean Mountains only..
Breathtaking beauty abounds with the waking of numerous flowers and trees blooming in the gardens and parks.
Nikitsky Botanical Gardens alone, located in Yalta, is home to over 28,000 species of trees and flowers, some native to lands from around the world. Many bloom year round, due to this unique climate.
