Thu, 28 Jan 1999 01:23:21 -0800: I fulfilled a lifelong dream here: I am now a certified SCUBA diver! My first dive (it was also with Ken and Sheryl) was at an island called Hin Daeng. Hin Daeng island consists of two rocks just peeking above the surface of the Andaman Sea, covering about as much area as your backyard. World-class dive site (the divemaster told us we were being "spoiled"). No sea snakes there, but plenty of lionfish and scorpion fish, moray eels, and several barracuda orbiting above us. |

Amazing Thailand is tourist-ready. |
An owner of a longtail boat mounts his new single-cylinder diesel engine on one side of a pivoted drive shaft assembly that is about 6 meters long. Then he removes the muffler and maladjusts the fuel mixture in the mistaken belief that he gets better performance when it's deafeningly loud and smokey. He'll be as deaf as Keith Richards within a couple of years. (Thanks, SLS) |

Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 02:28:22 -0800: Lanta Island, in the Andaman Sea. No email there (they just got power electrical lines 3 months ago). Lanta is nice. On the verge of over development if they let things get out of hand. Went walking on the road that passes my bungalow site and saw monkeys, monitor lizards, eagles, etc. There is a national park that "protects" the interior virgin rainforest of the southern part of the highlands on Lanta, as well as a large (something like 64 sq km) patch of sea and small islands in the vicinity.

Gotta include at least a couple of good sunset shots. (Lanta Island) |

OK, one more sunset shot. |

"Ko" means "island" in the Thai language.
"Ph" as in Phuket, or Phi Phi, has a silent-H. So "Ph" is pronounced
as "P".
