As I looked to find her there
her hair in disarray,
she fought to keep her childhood
but could not make it stay.
They chased it with their lies
their burdens and their pain,
these people she had loved,
the ones that she forgave.
She stands there so alone now
in this silence they have made:
she wants to love, she wants to trust
but has learned to be afraid.

As I kneel before her now,
slowly reaching out my arms
giving her all the time
to know I mean no harm.
Touching her hands gently
holding them in mine
letting her feel the love that's there
and the caring she will find.
I bring her close to me to hold
the tears fall down my face,
I cannot leave this child here
in this dismal dying place.

So with her nestled in my arms
I carry her way
to show this child inside of me
there is a better way.
As we talk, becoming friends
her smile starts to return:
a gentle glow from deep inside
now begins to burn.
We have taken that first step
this little child and I
to replace, what they have done,
So we may live, and laugh and cry.
