The Coast to Coast Walk was
originally devised by Alfred Wainwright, author of a series of illustrated guide books to
walks in the Lake District and the fells of northern England. The walk was described
in the book 'A Coast to Coast Walk' published in
1973. Unlike other long distance walks, such as the Pennine Way (which crosses the Coast
to Coast at Keld), the route is not an official one. As such there aren't many
signposts, and often there are diversions to the route, making path finding rather
difficult at times. Some of the paths do not follow recognised rights of way and are
permissive paths only. Also there is a difficulty with accommodation in that many of
the stops do not have Youth Hostels.
The Youth Hostel Association (YHA) runs a booking
service for accommodation on the walk, which includes organising bed & breakfast
(B&B) for stops which have no hostels. |
