Saba & St. Eustatius

Some New Photos From Saba & St. Eustatius

Saba and St. Eustatius (commonly called Statia), are two remote island of the Netherlands Antilles. Statia is 5 miles long and 2 miles wide and Saba has a total area of 5 square miles. With the elevation of Mt. Scenery on Saba at 2,864 feet and the distinctive profile of the Quill on Statia, the terrain of these islands is certainly dramatic. Dutch is the official language, but English is popular and spoken throughout the islands.

The Quill on Statia is an inactive volcanic cone containing abundant plant and animal life including very large trees and vines. Hiking trails follow the rim of the Quill and descend down into the crater. At one time, Statia was a thriving trade center and ruins of the great warehouses of this era can be seen along the beach and by snorkeling just off shore. In 1776, a gun salute by Statia cannons to a US Brig-of-War ship in its harbor made Statia the first place in the world to officially recognize the United States’ independence, a fact Statians are very proud of. Today, Statia is a very quiet and friendly place; spectacular hiking trails, exotic beaches, and pristine diving locations are often deserted.

Trails on Saba lead to the top of Mt. Scenery, pass by fascinating historical ruins, and descend down steep hillsides to isolated bays. Picturesque, friendly villages are nestled in these steep hillsides. Conservation is highly valued in Saba, both on land and below water. A Marine Park has been established around the perimeter of the entire island. With both shallow and deep diving opportunities close to shore, Saba has become one of the world’s great diving destinations.

The easy access and relaxed friendliness of Saba and Statia will allow you to explore all of the major features of these islands during your trip. You will also have the unique experience of being assimilated into the island cultures. Because of the short distance between these islands, we offer an Island Hopping Tour to Saba and Statia. If you enjoy a trip with both adventure and solitude, this is the place to go!
