Göreme is a very good place to stay if
you want to explore this fascinating landscape. A great daytrip on your own is to take the
bus up to the city of Uçhishar, visit the fortress (the top of the picture) and then walk
the 4 km way back to Göreme through the Dovecote Valley. Remember your
waterbottle, and
be careful with the climbing! |

Göreme
A small village where many people still
live in their rock houses. A lot of the pensions have rooms cut into the rocks. This is
convenient in summer, because the temperature stays low inside the rocks.
The Göreme Open Air museum is 1 km out of town.

The Ihlara Valley
From Göreme you can take a daytrip,
with one of the many local tour operators, to the beautiful Ihlara Valley. It's a gorge
that stretches 16 km through the Anatolian plain. Here you will find a lot of old churches
built into the rock.

The Underground Cities
The daytrip from Göreme also includes
a stop at the Underground city of Derinkoyu. The oldest part of these cities are more than
4000 years old.
Derinkoyu has rooms in 8 floors and goes 52 meters below the ground.
