The enemies in Quake II are extremely creative, and also deadly. If you want to win, you have to know what you're up against. While there are some strategies here for taking them down, your best bet is to rely on personal experience and what works for you.
The Light Guard is the easiest of the Quake II bad boys. Don't waste your precious ammo on them, just take them out with a few blaster shots. The only this really dangerous at all about these guys is that they are very good at shooting you from elevated heights. All of the guards usually attack in packs to make up for their lack of power. Shotguns guards can take a little more damage than their weaker relatives, they are still not a very tough challenge. If you do see one, try not to get too close, their shotgun can be painful at point blank. Instead, try to get them when they are a ways away from you. Their shotgun spreads out over large distances. Of all the 3 weaklings, these present the most danger. Take them out quickly, their machine gun is not a toy like the other little guys. Try not to stand in one place, fire at them while you sidestep. These guys carry a chaingun, and can hurt if you let them fire at you. If you get close, they will swing at you with their chaingun, but they rarely actually smack you with it. Run up to them with a Super Shotgun an fire before they have a change to hit you. One shot should do it. Gunners can be tricky, because if you get too close, they shoot you with a Machinegun, if you back away, you get grenaded. The best time to shoot them is when you are extremely far away, or when you're up close. When you get close, they use their Machinegun, but it takes 'em a few seconds to open it. What ever method you use, make you sure you try to defeat them in 1 shot. You will mostly run find Berserkers jump out at you from places in wall and other locations close to you, because thery have no guns, only metal arms. If you can, try and back away when they approach you, as their arms can knock you off edges beside take away health. They usually have support from other enemies to distract you. If this does happen, take out all of the Berserkers first. Iron Maidens aren't as tough as they look. They usually appear at far distances, launching rockets at you. Because of the distance their rockets must travel, the rockets are easy to outmanauver. Use an accurate gun, like your own Rocket Launcher or Rail gun to shoot them out. If you are close in, don't spend too much time looking at them, you'll get claw marks all over you. What can I say, these guys are hard. They have a Rail gun, so don't plan on dodging their shots. Your best method is to go at them with a Hyper Blaster or Chaingun, never stopping until they die. Resembling a cybernetic dog, but with a man's face, these may very well win the ugly award of Quake II. They shoot a life sucking tube out of their back when they get near you. If they attack to you, shot at them with a Super Shotgun to knock them off. Sometimes, when you fire at them, they get knocked over, only to rise back up after you think you've finished them. Wait a few seconds aftery you shoot it just to make sure. The Medic's main threat is its ability to bring back dead Strogg to life. It is equipped with a Hyper Blaster to defend itself, but Medics mostly rely on bringing resurrecting their friends. To prevent them from doing this, make sure you shoot enemies into chunks. It's really sad when you've finally gotten that Tank Commander down. only to see it pop back up. Brains are very dangerous up close, but harmless far away. If you are far away, when you fire at them a green sheild of energy appears to prevent some of the damage. If you are up close, the sheild doesn't work but their painful tentacles do. It may take more ammo, but it's still more beneficial to take 'em down at a distance. While harmless while you aren't in any water, Baraccuda Sharks are very good at hurting you in it. Guns that fire straight shots don't seem to work well, use guns that can hit a wide area (ala Super Shotgun). When fighting these underwater monsters, just remember to come up for air. The hovering Technicians don't make any noise, so they frequently sneak up behind you. None of their weapons do a whole lot of damage, but they attack in groups and get on your way. For some reason, the Super Shotgun works well on Technicians. Besides Tanks, Mutants are probably the hardest enemies to attack on the ground. They are fast, and don't go down easily. Use a continuously firing weapon, like a Hyper Blaster or Chaingun on them until they fall. Also, try to get out of they way when they attempt to jump on you. These are the weakest of the aerial creatures you will encounter. They almost always attack in packs, slowly advancing toward you to try to poke you with their spiked wings. Use a Chaingun or Hyper Blaster and sweep back and forth until all of the Flyers in the group explode. Despite its looks and description in the Quake II manual, Icaruses aren't as hard as they seem. They usually attack you from high above, and are good shots. Use a long range or accurate weapon to send them tumbling out of the sky, then watch the fireworks as they explode on impact! These are the powerhouses of Quake II. They have powerful Rocket Launchers, and relentlessly pound you with a flat, mocking expression on their metallic faces. Tanks' only real weaknesses are their slow speed. Take some shots at them, duck behind a wall, them repeat until they die. Also, weapons that cause explosions (Rocket Launchers, Grenades) dont't work very well against Tanks. Have an idea of what you are going to do before you fight them. First, swear as loud as you can. Then, run as fast as you can. However, if you still would like to try and survive an encounter with a Tank Commander, use a BFG, invincibility, or a Quad Damage. It take direct 2 BFG shots and a shot with a Rail gun to kill them. If you don't have any of these fine items, then you're in trouble. Whatever you do, don't stand in 1 place, keep moving around.
