Photo taken infront of Schonbrunn
Palace. It was designed by Johann Fischer von Erlach in 1692 as
an Imperial summer residence with the |
declared aim of exceeding
Versailles in splendor. The sober Habsburgs, however, eventually decided
on a more modest version of the plan of the great architect, which was
later modified in Rococo style. The Gloriette, a Neoclassical hall of
columns atop a hill in the garden overlooking the palace, was completed
in1775. Forty on Schonbrunn's 1,441 rooms are open to the public. In the
gardens there are the Imperial Coach Collection (Wagenburg), the Palm
House and the oldest zoo in the world, which was opened in 1752. |
