Background: Though your family is small, you and Guiness, your little brother, squabbled and fought all the way through childhood. After twenty years, your brother finally stormed out of the house, never to return. Everything was fine for about a year until your parents died. Realizing just how much you have missed little Guiness, and being expected as next of kin to bring him his share of the inheritance, you went into the nearby Human town of Delberz to learn of his fate.
It seems he led an interesting life this past year. He had quickly become a rather infamous smuggler and then had vanished after a Human woman of loose morals had dragged him off on some adventure or another close to eight months ago. Despite your distaste for adventure and loose women of any kind, you dug for more information. This woman, Alyssa Schindler, was an apprentice of Hiernoymus Blitzen, a local hedge-wizard. After confronting this man, you found out that not only did she go off gallivanting all across the known world with your brother in tow, but came back five months ago to finish her training and become a full-fledged Wizard. Of course, the old fool had no idea where she had gone after that.
Realizing that you needed some magic as well if you were going to pry Guiness away from that Schindler woman, you bullied Hiernoymus into writing a letter of introduction to a better Wizard in Altdorf, the capital city of the Empire.
You can’t understand how he was a better Wizard. All he wanted to do was have you cook, protesting that Halflings could never be proper Wizards, that they just didn’t have the spark it took. When he did want to teach you things, however, it was always something useless and stupid: juggling balls of fire and the like. Shopping around with various tutors and bribing them to teach you spells that had actual everyday household uses dried up most of your inheritance, but after only two months you are on the verge of becoming a full Wizard. Your pride is well-earned considering that most Humans (including that Schindler girl, whom you plan on giving a proper drubbing) take nearly a decade to progress as far as you have. However, you have not yet found anyone willing to take you the last step to attaining the rank of Wizard, prefering instead to keep you as an Apprentice who makes tasty meals.
Hoping that your current grasp of magic will do in spiriting Guiness away from "that woman," you have put your superior, if old-fashioned and "proper," intellect to the task of finding your long lost brother. Stout and maternal, you are a fearsome woman when aroused. Your skill with the sling and with sharp admonishments have become a bit of legend in Altdorf and have put many a footpad and cutthroat to flight.
Wagons Ho! May you arrive safe and sound at your destination, pilgrim!
