Background: Seven hundred and fifty years ago, the city of Middenheim all but fell to when the besieging Middenlander army broke into the tunnels honeycombing the Fauschlag (the flat-top mountain on which the city sits). The only thing that saved the city were a few hundred Dwarven Tunnel Fighters, descended from the Dwarves that had tunneled up through the same rock one thousand and eight hundred years before. To prevent this from ever happening again, the tunnels and Undercity were supposedly "sealed for all time." Knowing how treacherous Humans (and their scheming pansy Elven friends) are, the Dwarves kept some of the tunnels in use. If the Humans and Elves ever betrayed them, the Dwarves of Middenheim can always retreat to the Undercity and escape. You are a proud part of the newest generation of Tunnel Fighters. Though only seventy-five, you already command a large squad of Fighters on patrols through the tunnels, clearing out the vermin that sometimes finds its way into your jurisdiction. Occasionally, you and your platoon run up against mutants or Beastmen, but they are only a minor threat. Life is good underground; you venture up to the surface only rarely. The Undercity is the only real Middenheim. The top-dwellers are only squatters upon your city and you almost wish that you could be rid of them. You are a proud warrior, and for good reason: you lead the Tunnel Fighters, the elite warriors of the Dwarves, and none can withstand the touch of your axe
