Prologue II
The scene switches from Ordac and his unusual visitor to the city of Elman, ruled by the rich Lord Hearston Ruslan.
At the age of twenty-two, Hearston thought he had everything going for him. "I have it all," he said. "Money, fame, power," he looked at Michele. "Beautiful women, nothing will ever get in my way."
He remembers how he "acquired" Michele two years ago. The Kingdom of Malting was located on a southeastern island. It covered less than half the island, and rest of it was unexplored. The city of Elman once belonged to this kingdom, but long ago a young lord bought it, and turned it into a city for wealthy people all around the world, the wealthiest of the city being Lord David Ruslan. Through the ages, his family inherited the city, until now Lord Hearston Ruslan rules the city.
For amusement, Hearston bought a Gormandy. It was a vicious beast, smuggled out of Salan Lakor. It was the last of its kind, so Hearston paid quite a price. He had heard that the inhabitants of the unexplored area of the island, particularly the women, were vicious warriors. Hearston’s explorers did not go far until they found a strong tribe. They looked for a brave enough warrior, until a woman named Michele volunteered. They brought her back, and Hearston watched in amusement as the Gormandy, which vaguely resembles a dragon, was brought out. In a few minutes, Michele had delivered a deathblow to the monster.
Hearston was so impressed that he hired her to be his bodyguard that instant. She seemed to enjoy working for him, and he learned that her people were not as uncivilized as he had thought. She spoke the language that every other country spoke, and could read and write. She has protected him for these last two years, though most of her work was intimidating beggars that would approach the city gates.
But now the flashback is over, and Michele was staring out the window. Hearston walked over to her. He really didn’t need a bodyguard. He was somewhat tall, fairly powerfully built, and learned fencing at an early age. People respected him not only for his wealth and political power, but also because it was not wise to argue with a man carrying a cutlass at his side. "What is the matter?" he asked Michele.
Michele rarely spoke, unless her master addressed her. "Something is starting. Something big."
"I hope not," said Hearston. "The last thing I need is trouble brewing."
