[Part 6: "SuperS Series" Japanese Episodes 128-166]

Introduction

April 21, 2001 - The English version of SuperS is now finally airing in Canada.  I am not planning to write up all the episodes because you can now buy SuperS uncut on home video DVD. Here are a few English-to-Japanese episode comparisons for your enjoyment.

SuperS Episode 1
English: 121 Dreams Take Flight
Japanese: 128. Unmei no Deai! Pegasus no Mau Yoru [An Unexpected Encounter! The Night Pegasus Performs His Steps!]

The opening theme animation is actually the second Japanese SuperS opening, showing the Amazoness Quartet instead of the Amazon Trio.  I don't know if this opening was also used in the U.S. broadcast.  The English "Sailor Moon" title was added digitally.  This simple edit is surprisingly unprofessional; the titles video is noticeably lower quality than the rest of the show.

The music in this episode was mostly the same as Japanese except for the opening and closing themes.

When the girls are waiting for the eclipse, Serena tries to scare Rini by saying that spooky things can happen during an eclipse.  The girls chastise Serena and everyone laughs for no apparent reason.  In the Japanese version, Rei chastises Usagi for lying to children to which Usagi says "did I say something untrue?" (she really did think that spooky things happen during eclipses).

The English version makes Zirconia's voice male.  In the Japanese version, Zirconia is referred to as a woman and has an old woman's voice.

Tiger's Eye says that Fish Eye's tastes are different than his.  How right he is (see SuperS episode 10).

Tuxedo Mask appears to have won his match with Tiger's Eye when Tiger's Eye loses his whip.  However, the whip is actually paralyzing Tuxedo Mask by holding his shadow to a tree.  Soon after, Tiger's Eye has the whip in his hand again even though Tuxedo Mask's shadow is still tied to the tree.  [Noticed by Salvatore].  Then again, it is a magical whip...

The ending animation used is still the S series ending.

SuperS  Episode 2
English:
122. No Ordinary HorsePower
Japanese: 129. Super Henshin Futatabi! Pegasus no Power [Super Transformation! It happens again by the power of Pegasus]

This episode is essentially identical in both versions.

SuperS Episode 3
English: 123. Sweet Dreams
Japanese 130. Mamore Haha no Yume! W Moon no Shin Hissatsu Waza

Tuwinkulu Elu, which was variously translated as Twinkle Yell or Twinkle Bell in different fan translations becomes "Twinkle Bell" in the official English version.  Moon Gorgeous Meditation was also called Moon Gorgeous Meditation in Japanese.

SuperS Episode 6
English: 126.Much Ado About Kitten
Japanese: 133. Artemis no Uwaki? Nazo no Koneko Toujou

All specific references to Christianity were removed from the English Version. For example, in the part where the nun is hoping for good luck with the choir, she is actually reciting the Lord's Prayer in Japanese. Then she has a discussion with Tiger's Eye outside the church about God's love for humanity, but in English she instead talks about the wedding taking place later in the day. When Tigers Eye attacks the nun in the Japanese version, she wards him off with the cross reciting a banishing prayer and it appears to have a momentary effect when Tigers Eye falls down in pain, but then he recovers and says "that only works in scary movies". In the English version, the dialog is completely different (she says Tigers Eye should try self-help booklets) but of course you can still see her holding out the cross and Tigers Eye's physical response.

SuperS Episode 9
English:
129 "The Trouble with Love"
Japanese: 136 "Mamoru wo mamore! Ninja Usagi no Yakimochi"
[Protect Mamoru! Ninja Usagi's Jealousy]

When Darien gets up from his computer, Diana reminds him that she's there to make sure he finishes his report.  Darien says he's going to take a bath.  In Japanese he teases Diana by asking if she wants to join him.  That's why Diana turns red!

Meanwhile, Raye also decides to take a bath.  She walks into the bathroom, not knowing that Darien is already in there.  He dives for cover!

SuperS Episode 10
English:
Episode 130 "Phony Fairy"
Japanese: Episode 137 "Ayakashi no Mori! Utsukushiki Yousei no Izanai"
[Mysterious Forest! An Invitation from a Beautiful Fairy]

Is Fish Eye a guy or a girl?  In this episode, in English, Fish Eye is referred to as "she".  However, in the original, Fish Eye is a guy (and is only "interested" in other guys).

SuperS #24
English:
Episode 144 "Heartfelt Melody"
Japanese: Episode 151 "Shin no Power Bakuhatsu! Ami Kokoro no Shirabe"
[True Power Explodes! Ami's Melody of the Heart]

In the Japanese version, Ami's new transformation is preceded by a sort of dream scene in which her "normal" self, in a pure au naturel state (including a waist-up close-up), talks to her "sailor" self.

SuperS #25
English:
Episode 145 "Dreams of Her Own"
Japanese: Episode 152 "Honoo no Jounetsu! Mars Ikari no Chou Hissatsu Waza"
[Burning Passion! Mars' Furious Super Deadly Attack]

This episode was not shown during the first broadcast run of SuperS series in America.  The monkey-lemures "Mane-Mane" (shown below from the original episode imitating Sailor Jupiter) was deemed too obscene for a children's show in the USA.  This episode will be edited and included the next time SuperS series is run.
