Westerners would call Anime "cartoons." Anime is another term for Japanese Animation. Most of our cartoons are actually from Japan. The popular 80's cartoon, Robotech, was actually called Super Dimensional Fortress Macross in Japan. Also there was Voltron. Even today we are getting our so called "cartoons" from Japan such as Sailor Moon (no more new episodes in the USA), Teknoman (Tekkaman in Japan, Canceled in USA now), Ronin Warriors (Syndication), DragonBall Z, Eagle Riders and the list goes on and on. Very few of our shows have actually inspired the Japanese to make their own series, the only series I know that the Japanese have made into their own is Transformers.

There are different types of anime. You could simpilfy them into four categories: Magic Girl, Mecha, Hentai, and General. Magic Girl Anime is anime for little girls like Sailor Moon. Mecha anime is your basic man-pilot robot versus some alien creature like Macross. Hentai Anime is your anime made for adults usually containing lots of violence and sex. General Anime is all the other anime. They are usually based on video games or manga like Ranma 1/2 or Street Fighter II.
