About the writing of this story...
”A Hero of a Horse” was written when Alicia was 13. “A
former riding instructor had a cat who rode on the
back of her old horse, ‘Blackie,’ ”Alicia says, “I
thought a cute story could be made of the idea, so I
wrote it. I also wanted a ‘horse story’ that I could
submit to the magazine ‘Stable Kids,’ which I did. I
didn’t hear back from them until July of the next year.
They published it in the September issue. I was
pretty excited; even though I’ve been writing stories
and stuff for as long as I can remember, this was the
first story I’d ever really submitted to a magazine,
and the first one I ever got published.” The story
was later put in Alicia’s church’s homeschoolers
newsletter ...without Alicia realizing it. “I was at
drama one night and this girl, Heather, says, ‘I really
liked your story!’ I was like, ‘Oh. Thanks. ...What
story?’ I had known that my mother gave it to the
woman in charge, but not that it had been put in
there (my mom didn’t know either).
Oh, and the inspiration for the dog, ‘Buddy’ was
from our dog (that’s his name).”
This story was printed in Alicia's newsletter the "Christian Girl" not long after, illustrated by Julia (staff writer).
