Lovers in their previous lives they were killed together when Queen Beryl attacked the Moon Kingdom a thousand years ago.
Reborn on Earth with no memory of their former lives they couldn't stand each other. Darien would take cheap shots at Serena and call her meatball head, while Serena would stick out her tongue and call Darien Dweeb, Minus Zero, ect. Even though they fought together as Sailor Moon and TuxedoMask, neither knew the others true identity until "A Crystal Clear Destiny".
Just as soon as they find each other they are torn apart, again by Queen Beryl. She kidnaps Darien and brainwashes him. As if that wasn't bad enough she then pits him against the scouts.
The first time that Serena sees the new, evil Tuxedo Mask and realizes what's happened her eyes fill up with tears. "Traitor ," she says. "What have they done to you?" Occassionally she is able to break through to him, but never enough to break Beryls hold more than momentarily (except when she uses the Moon Crescent Wand in "Tuxedo Unmasked"). These momentary breaks are very breif and signified with his rose turning from black to red.
In "Day of Destiny" in the midst of carrying out Queen Beryl's orders to dispose of her, Darien is presented with the kneeling figure of Sailor Moon holding out their locket and pleading with him to remember. When he touches the locket Beryl's hold on him is released. Sacrificing himself, he sheilds Serena from Beryl's rock spear and dies in her arms. Like the others he is brought back to life by the power of the crystal (not explained in the N.A. version).
In the begining of Sailor Moon R neither the Scouts or Darien remember the events of the previous series. Although Luna gives the Scouts back their memories in episodes "The Return of Sailor Moon" and "So You Want to Be In Pictures", Darien is left without his memory while his detached spirit keeps watch over Sailor Moon and the others. He regains his memory in a near fatal fight against Alan and Ann after which the Moonlight Knight rejoins with his body.
Finally all looked happy for Serena and Darien. Things were peaceful, they were together. And then arrived Rini, a mysterious young girl chased by four weird sisters and their leader, Rubius. Shortly after Rini's arrival Darien begins receiving visions of Serena in danger. Thinking it the only way to protect her, Darien breaks up with Serena in "The Cosmetic Caper". One of the saddest scenes in the series is Serena crying in phone booth after confronting Darien at his apartmnet.
Things remain ever tense between Serena and Darien, Darien wanting to be with Serena and Serena not able to figure out what happened between them. In "Prediction of Doom" we get a look at the visions / nightmares Darien is being plagued with and at the end of the episode he is shown on a dark, deserted pier, crying because he can't stand hurting Serena. Unfourtunately the episode where Serena finds out what has been going on and they get back together hasn't been dubbed yet, but if the seventeen new episodes do come through it should be in there.
