Lucifer is the older twin brother of Michael and was known in heaven as "Lucifel." There is not much known about Lucifer, only that he seemed charismatic, excelled in what he did, and was a bit arrogant. It is unknown exactly why he chose to rebel against heaven. His younger brother Michael has mixed feelings about his older brother...most of the time no one can even mention Lucifer in his presence. However, it is obvious as the manga goes on that he deeply cares for his older brother and wants recognition from Lucifer more than anything. This is something Michael shares in common with Baru, his shy friend who loved Lucifer. She was so faithful to Lucifer that she jumped in front of him to protect him from Michael's fire sword during the holy war. Lucifer then took her with him and brought her back as Barbelo, one of the seven satans.

When Lucifer came to Sheol he made himself "one" with the land. The land was dead and barren before he came, but after he joined with it, it came to be "alive" in a sense. However, the body that resides in hell is empty of a soul. Long ago a mysterious force came and took the soul of Lucifer away. From that time foward the empty shell that was his body grew in size. In order to keep it from destroying hell, "brides" are sacrificed to him. There must be 999 brides in order to be effective. Belial is the one in charge of finding the "brides" and sacrificing them. |
Katoh cannot accept Lucifer. To him Kira truly is dead and this Lucifer is an abomination. So Katoh's one obsession is to kill Lucifer. He seriously does attempt this, but at the same time he knows that Lucifer is impervious to any harm he can try to bring on him. Lucifer then kills Katoh. Yet even so it seems that Lucifer still holds some of Kira in him.
Later on we learn that Lucifer was "fated" to become the ruler of hell. He didn't have a choice and resented this fact immensely. He hated god because of this. He did everything to break the rules, including sneaking into heaven and attempting to kill Alexiel. That was when he met her for the first time. However, he saw much of himself in her and viewed her as a kindred spirit. Before he leaves her, he promises that he will set her free. Later on he breaks Alexiel out of Eden. It was this last act that got him punished. God took Lucifer's soul and put it into the sword Nanatsusaya as punishment. He also had is memory taken from him.
During the final battle in heaven Lucifer confronts god. God is arrogant and thinks he can control Lucifer because he holds the Pendent that Rosiel created to bring Lucifer back. Lucifer seems to be utterly in god's conrol and so god orders Luci to kill Setsuna, only when it seems he will strike and kill Setsuna he turns suddenly and attacks god. It turns out that the whole pendent slave thing was a hoax and Lucifer was just playing slave all along. When the original pendent was broken at Kira's death, it turns out that Lucifer was freed from it forever. He was acting all along because he wanted a way to get into heaven and kill god. Rosiel did know all this, but didn't warn god about Lucifer's plan either. Rosiel was so far gone by this point, the only thing he cared about was Alexiel.
Lucifer never really turns back into Kira like I was expecting, which is a good thing. He still seems to have a bit of Kira in him, but Lucifer is and will always be dominant. When the story ends Lucifer does not go back to Kira's life and become human, he goes back to hell with Mad Hatter (MH is in butterfly form).
For a long time no one knew what had happened to the Lucifer's soul...only recently do we know that the soul was put inside the holy sword Nanatsusaya Mitamanotsurugi (Nanatsusaya for short:) The holy sword is controlled by a pendant. If anything occurs to the pendant it reflects on the body that Lucifer is in. Whatever occurs to Lucifer's current body reflects upon his body in hell, which in turn affects the very land that is hell. So when Rosiel kills Kira Sakuya, the latest incarnation of Nanatsusaya, and the Sword's pendant shatters, hell literally falls apart. The very land bleeds Lucifer's blood and eventually Sheol is completely destroyed. This wrecks havoc on the balance between heaven and hell.
Is Lucifer dead? No....he is too powerful to die. His kind can reincarnate over and over...an endless cycle. This is something Rosiel recognizes, because it is the same with him. It is Rosiel who decides to bring Lucifer back to life. However, he will return as Rosiel's "slave" because the pendant has been restored and is now is Rosiel's hands. When "Kira" meets up again with Setsuna he is on Rosiel's side and he gives Katoh a deadly blow. Even though he has returned and still has all his previous memories as "Kira" he is a cold and evil presence. "Kira" is dead...now the true Lucifer lives....

After the great Battle between Heaven and Hell, Lucifer and his followers leave for Sheol (the lowest level of Hell.) Belial (Mad Hatter) is one of those fallen angels. She is in love with Lucifer because he is the only one who has ever rejected her advances. Only Lucifer is ever allowed to call her by her true name, everyone else must call her Mad Hatter. Belial awaits the day in which Lucifer will succumb to her...for she says that will be the day her love will turn to hate.
